Valheim serpent hunting guide: meat, scales and trophies
Serpents are the ocean's apex predator and its best renewable resource: their meat makes the strongest early food, their scales forge a top shield, and their trophies look great on a pike. Hunting them is a skill, not a gamble. Here's how to do it without losing your ship.
When to sail
Serpents spawn in the Ocean biome, and they're far more common at night and during storms. A calm, sunny afternoon is a poor hunting trip; a thunderhead rolling in is your window. You won't see them in shallow coastal water near spawn — push out into open ocean where the deep water begins. Our free seed viewer shows an approximate Preview of where your open ocean starts (our in-house estimate, not exact in-game coordinates), so you don't waste fuel sailing over shallows.
The right ship and loadout
Take a Longship if you have one — its health pool shrugs off a hit or two that would sink a Karve. Bring a Harpoon (crafted from leviathan chitin, see below), a good axe, and a stack of arrows. The harpoon is the whole strategy: it lets you latch a serpent and tow it, instead of chasing a fast, weaving target across the waves.
The harpoon play
Hook the serpent, then either drag it toward shore where it beaches and dies slowly, or hold position and melee it down while a friend shoots. Cutting the line is always an option if your ship is taking hits — never let pride sink the boat. Once it's dead, butcher it with the axe for meat and scales; the trophy is a bonus drop you can mount back home.
What you get
Serpent meat cooks into serpent stew, the best stamina and health food for most of the game. Serpent scales build the scale shield, a light parry shield with strong block. Trophies are bragging rights and a small upgrade material. All three justify regular hunting trips once you're comfortable at sea, especially before you've tamed a stable of lox.
Turning it into a routine
Once you've got the harpoon and a Longship, set up a small coastal camp at the edge of the open ocean: a campfire, a chest for meat and scales, and a workbench to butcher on the spot. Serpent meat spoils, so cook it into stew at the camp or haul it straight to your main base's cauldron. A dedicated serpent run every few in-game days keeps your best food and a spare scale shield in stock, and the trophies fund your next build. The loop is simple: sail out at dusk, hook one, tow it to the beach by your camp, butcher, sail home.
Safety and retreat
Always watch your ship's HP and your exit. Serpents come in pairs during storms, and a second one can finish a damaged Longship. Keep the harpoon line short, know your heading home, and if a fight turns, cut and run — the meat isn't worth a rebuild. For deeper open-water tactics, our ocean sailing guide covers navigation and weather, and the curated seed list flags worlds with calm, serpent-rich waters near spawn. A hunting camp in the right world is a pantry; in the wrong one, it is a hobby.
Fixing a common mix-up: the harpoon is crafted, not bought
One correction that saves a wasted voyage: the Abyssal Harpoon does not come from Haldor's counter. It is crafted from chitin, which you harvest by picking the barnacles off a leviathan's back with a pickaxe — meaning your first real serpent hunt is incidental. You sail out, find the moving island, mine it before it dives, and walk away with enough chitin to forge the harpoon that makes every later hunt tractable. The leviathan has a habit of sinking once you have taken its barnacles, so mine fast and get back to the boat. Workbench level three handles the crafting; the chitin is the only exotic ingredient.
Measured case: choosing hunting grounds by seed
How much of your map borders huntable deep water is a seed property, and it shapes the whole routine. On sprawling island worlds like FLOrida — where not a single boss altar is reachable on foot — the open ocean starts practically at your doorstep and a hunting run is an after-dinner errand. On compact continental seeds the coast is close but the deep water is not: you sail further out before the hunts begin, which argues for the coastal-camp routine from the section above. Check where your shallow shelves end in the seed viewer before building the camp, and if you are picking a world for hunting specifically, the curated list flags sailing-friendly candidates with measured distances attached.
The stew pipeline
The reason hunting becomes a routine is a single recipe: serpent stew, the dish that keeps health and stamina high from the mid-game into the endgame. One serpent feeds a playthrough's worth of stews for a long stretch, which is why the coastal camp with a cauldron pays for itself — butcher at the shore, cook on site, and the cargo home is finished food instead of spoiling raw meat. The full loop, camp to camp: dusk sail, storm or night window, harpoon, tow to the shallows, butcher, stew, portal home. Once the loop is installed, the ocean stops being a hazard zone and becomes the best kitchen in the game. Install the loop once, and it pays out every week after.
Weather is the spawn button
Serpents patrol open ocean year-round, but the hunt really starts with the forecast: storm weather raises how often they surface, which is why patient hunters watch the sky as much as the water. The practical loop is to run your freight or exploration route during calm seas and dedicate storm days to hunting — same ocean, same boat, but the odds tilt hard toward the harpoon. Check a seed's ocean share before committing, because a world with generous open water turns weather luck into a repeatable schedule.
FAQ
Can I hunt serpents from a raft or karve?
A karve can outrun one in a pinch, but it cannot fight one — one hit takes most of its hull. A raft is not a boat, it is a suggestion. Hunt from a longship, or flee in a karve and come back prepared.
When are serpents most common?
Night and storms, in open ocean deep water. A calm sunny afternoon is the worst hunting window; a rolling thunderhead at dusk is the best one you can plan for.
What is serpent meat actually worth?
Cooked serpent meat is the strongest early meat food, and serpent stew stays a top-tier health-and-stamina dish deep into the endgame. It is the main reason hunting becomes a routine rather than a one-off.
How do I get the harpoon?
The Abyssal Harpoon is crafted, not bought: harvest chitin from the barnacles on a leviathan's back with a pickaxe, then craft the harpoon at a level-three workbench. That single upgrade turns serpents from a hazard into livestock.
