How to find your Valheim seed

Your world's seed is a short string of letters and numbers — the DNA of the entire map. Once you have it, you can preview the whole world on our map viewer. Here's every way to get it.

Method 1: the world list (easiest)

1. Launch Valheim and stay on the main menu — you don't even need to load the world.
2. Select the world you want and look at the entry: the seed is printed right next to the world's name.
3. Click the seed text to copy it, then paste it into our seed viewer.

Method 2: when creating a new world

1. On the world creation screen, click the seed field below the world name.
2. Type any seed you like — letters and numbers, up to 10 characters. Or leave it empty and the game rolls a random one.
3. Enter it on our viewer first if you want to see the map before committing: check boss distances, Haldor's location and the route to the Deep North.

Method 3: from a dedicated server

A dedicated server can't be given a seed directly — it loads whatever world its save files contain. To find that seed, check the server's world files: the .fwl file in the world's folder stores the seed as plain text near the start of the file (open it with any text editor). Alternatively, ask whoever created the world — they can read it off the world list in their single-player menu.

Things that trip people up

• Seeds are case sensitive. Hb7sk9pqwu is a completely different world from HB7sK9pqWu. Copy the seed exactly.
• Renaming a world doesn't change the seed — but creating a world with the same name elsewhere starts a brand-new random world.
• Game updates can change generation. Valheim 1.0 changed the far north (the Deep North) — old guides' screenshots may look different from today's worlds, but the seed string itself never changes. See our 1.0 update page for details.
• A seed decides the map, not the loot. Chest contents and drops are rolled while you play.
