Deep North expedition guide: sailing safe to the ice

The Deep North is 1.0's headline act: the old frozen edge of the map rebuilt into a full endgame zone. It rewards preparation more than any other region — the ice is far from spawn, the water en route is where serpents eat unprepared crews, and frost is the default state of existence. Here's how to plan the trip properly.

Step one: pick a world with a reachable north

Expedition success is decided before you set sail. On a seed viewer, look for a clean ocean corridor from your base region to the northern ice — a route that follows coastlines and island hops rather than crossing huge open water. Two candidates can have Deep North coasts an equal straight-line distance away and be nothing alike in actual travel time. Our curated list includes seeds chosen specifically for a clean northern route, like NorthStar1 and DeepFreeze0.

Frost resistance is not optional

The voyage itself

Sail the longship with the wind, hug the route you scouted, and beach before dark. The open water between the temperate band and the ice is serpent territory; a longship with a decent pilot outruns most of them, but cargo runs and poor weather turn encounters lethal. Carry portal materials if your group has them — dropping a forward portal at the first safe cove converts a perilous voyage into a commute.

What to bring ashore

Think "mobile base": materials for a workbench, a sheltered fire, and a portal frame. Wood is scarce in the far north, so bring your own. Food should lean toward the healthiest trio you can craft — the north hits hard and regenerates slowly.

Scouting beats memory

Because 1.0 changed the north, old-guide knowledge doesn't transfer — but the seed does. Paste your world into the viewer and read the ice edge before you sail it: where the Deep North coast begins, which direction the corridor runs, and where the nearest fallback cove sits. For the generation changes behind all this, see our 1.0 update breakdown. Cold seas reward the crew that looked at the map first.
