Finding Haldor, the Valheim trader

Haldor is Valheim's only merchant: one gnome, one shop, one location per world. He sells things no anvil can make — the Megingjord belt, the fishing rod, Ymir flesh — and every seasoned player has a Haldor story. Usually it starts with "I found him on day 400." It doesn't have to.

Where he spawns

Haldor always generates inside a Black Forest biome, some distance from spawn. The exact spot is fixed by the seed — the same seed always puts him in the same place. That's the key fact most players miss: his location isn't a mystery, it's a property of your world. You just need a way to read it.

Find him before you even launch the game

Paste your seed into a seed viewer that marks trader locations. His dot comes with coordinates in in-game meters, so you can plan the trip like any other destination: overland or by boat, which stretch of Black Forest to enter, roughly how far the walk is. Our viewer workflow guide covers the routine in detail.

Why bother finding him early?

The in-game fallback

If you prefer to find him the old way: listen for his distinctive laugh near Black Forest edges, and watch for the red-brown camp between trees. Valheim also puts a trading-post icon on your in-game map once you've been close enough. Both methods work — they're just slower than reading the seed.

Seeds with easy Haldor access

Some worlds are friendlier than others — our curated seed list flags entries where Haldor sits unusually close to spawn, like HaldorClose and TraderBay22. Every card lists his distance so you know before you commit. Once you've made one gold-fueled shopping trip at hour thirty instead of hour four hundred, there's no going back.
