Valheim biome guide for 1.0: every zone on the map

Valheim's map is a set of rings with a temperamental personality: the further from spawn, the harder everything hits — and since 1.0, the far edges hold real endgame zones instead of empty scenery. Here's the tour, zone by zone, with the "when" and "with what" for each.

Meadows — the home ring

Gentle greens, gentle mobs. Meadows teach building, farming and bow aim. Everything you need for the first ten hours lives here: wood, stone, deer, bees. Build your first base close to water and you'll never regret it.

Black Forest — the first grind

Copper, tin, core wood and the Elder. Bring a shield you trust; trolls redecorate. Burial chambers hold surtling cores for portals and smelters — count them as your first dungeon runs. Haldor also lives in the Black Forest, somewhere, on every map.

Swamp — iron country

Wet, dark, and home to sunken crypts. Iron from here gates the mid-game: longship, better tools, decent armor. Poison resistance mead turns the swamp from miserable into merely damp. Wraiths at night; turnip seeds for later farming.

Mountain — silver and cold

Frost mead or wolf gear required. Silver veins power the next tier, drakes drop trophies, and stone golems hit like falling cliffs. Moder's altar sits mid-slope on most maps — scout the approach before summoning.

Plains — the discipline check

Deathsquitos teach humility at any gear level. But plains bring barley, flax and fuling camps — the path to padded armor and black-metal weapons. Loot camps methodically, never at dusk.

Mistlands — the fog wall

The first biome that demands navigation: mist so thick you need wisp light. Carapace materials, the Queen's fight, and terrain that punishes careless climbing. Take it slowly; the reward curve is steep.

Ashlands — the burning south

The far-south endgame: scorched shores, hostile everything, and gear checks at every step. Not a place for a first visit — a place for a planned campaign with portals, supplies and an exit strategy.

Deep North — the new far north

1.0's rebuilt endgame ice. Full details live in our expedition guide and 1.0 update page; the short version — a reachable ocean corridor matters more than anything else on the map.

Reading your world's mix

Every seed mixes these zones differently, and the seed viewer shows you the blend before you play. Biome percentages on the viewer's stats panel tell you what kind of world you're choosing: swamp-heavy maps are iron rich, ocean-heavy maps are sailing epics. Pick the personality you want, then check our curated list for worlds that already fit.
